When it comes to designing interiors, Gauri Khan is a name to reckon with. The founder and chief executive of Gauri Khan Designs, she has lent her flair to a few exclusive projects like a nursery for friend Karan Johar’s kids; the Ralph Lauren flagship store in Delhi, a party room at Antilia and the nightclub Cirque le Soir. Recently, Khan was guest of honour at the reopening of the flagship store of Zoya, the diamond boutique from the House of Tata. We caught up with her and got her to tell us about her design aesthetics, future plans and the first piece of jewellery that SRK gifted her! Edited excerpts.
How do you go about curating the furniture and objets d’art for your projects?
I travel extensively and pick up different things from different places. I enjoy visiting new places, from fairs to flea markets… so my collections are always eclectic and interesting.
Of all your design projects, which one is the closest to your heart?
All my clients are priority and I can’t differentiate between them. I don’t have any one favourite and have enjoyed designing for each project.
Minimalist or opulent—how would you define your design aesthetic when it comes to interiors?
I prefer minimalist and comfortable, but having said that, it would vary depending on the client’s brief and their vision of the space they want to create.
Does your design aesthetic reflect in your accessory choices as well?
I like jewellery that is well-crafted and tells a story–like Zoya’s collections do. Each design has a specific inspiration…like this lovely Eiffel tower-inspired bracelet I’m wearing from the Musee Du Luxe collection with fine lattice work and beautifully cut stones; and the emerald ring from their 1920s Hollywood selection that has a very 1920s, art deco feel…like something out of The Great Gatsby!
What was the first piece of jewellery that SRK gifted you?
A gold wedding ring!
Please share three styling tips with jewellery for our readers.
Choose jewellery that flatters the cut of your face, your skin colour and your body
Less is more. If you are wearing a statement necklace, it may be enough. You can go with subtle earrings or a bracelet or leave them out altogether.
Pick a starting point. If you want to wear a specific piece of jewellery, then use that as the starting point and match your clothes and other accessories to it. Otherwise pick an outfit and match the jewellery and accessories with that.
What are the upcoming projects that you are most excited about?
I’m designing a spa in Goa, which is my most ambitious project yet. It spreads over 50,000 square feet, and is taking up much of my attention right now… I’m also designing a line of luxury marble products, which is looking quite distinctive.
